The book includes maps, photos, and route descriptions for 40 of our favorite local trips as well as destinations in Northern California. Most trips have options for beginner, intermediate and advanced kayakers so that well over 100 trip options exist. Our background teaching all skill levels of paddlers has given us good insight on what beginners can handle and what more experienced paddlers are looking for. This is a book that someone just starting out can buy and continue to enjoy throughout their paddling career--as their skills increase, so does the area available to paddle.

Magazine Reviews from ...
Sea Kayaker,  Paddler, and Canoe & Kayak

Sea Kayaker magazine review by editor Chris Cunningham
"The coast of California has some spectacular scenery, but it is not a place for the uninformed paddler.... Roger Schumann and Jan Shriner have both the experience to know what skills are required to paddle the more demanding stretches of the coast and ... a knack for matching paddlers of various abilities with appropriate challenges..... [so that] paddlers of all abilities will find rewarding outings that will be well matched to their skills."

Paddler magazine review by publisher Eugene Buchanan
"From detailed site descriptions to practical planning advice [this book] is a Northern California sea kayaker's classic."

Canoe & Kayak magazine's review by editor Bryan Chitwood
"This real-world guide provides exacting detail and thorough coverage of one of the world's most spectacular coastlines. Don't paddle there without it."

BASK (Bay Area Sea Kayakers club) Newsletter review by Penny Wells
"If there is one word to describe [this] nifty new book, it is balance. There is as much meat here for the advanced kayaker as there is for the novice .... There is no drivel to wade through to get to the good stuff.... Clearly, Roger and Jan have done their homework ... and it shows ... they write concisely and well. You'll want a copy ... right on the shelf between your calendar and your tide log."
